Andy Farrell says Scotland’s shock call to drop Finn Russell for tomorrow’s clash in Dublin will not change Ireland’s approach.
Scotland have named Blair Kinghorn at fly-half, while Russell is on the bench.
Russell is one of the most attacking and creative No10s in the world, but Kinghorn has impressed for Edinburgh and starred in a 56-8 rout of Connacht two weeks ago.
Victory for Ireland tomorrow will secure them the Triple Crown and possibly the Six Nations, too — if England beat France in Paris.
Asked if Russell’s absence changes Ireland’s plans, coach Farrell said: “No. Am I surprised [Russell isn’t playing]? Yes and no. I think everyone was expecting Finn to play, he’s a great player.
“But I watched the Connacht game and Blair was the best player on the field by a country mile.
“We know him well, we know his strengths: very dangerous with ball in hand, takes the line on, very dangerous counter attack-wise, good passing game, good kicking game as well.”
Scotland coach Gregor Townsend defended his decision. “I’d prefer to focus on what Blair has done and how well he’s played and how he’s deserved his opportunity, which he certainly has with his performances throughout the season,” he said.
“We see this as an opportunity for Blair. He’s been in really good form. He wasn’t available last week [due to personal reasons], but the week before that he played his best game of the season against Connacht.”
