CheshireLive reported drivers escaping the motorway traffic poured onto the A56 through Helsby and Frodsham, causing heavy congestion through the towns. After one lane of the three-lane carriageway was closed, all traffic was temporarily held on the carriageway as the two vehicles were moved on to the hard shoulder.

All lanes were re-opened just over an hour after the incident. Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported that traffic had "returned to normal" by 9.07am, just under two hours after the collision occurred.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: "At around 7.20pm on Friday 16 September police were called to reports of a collision on the M56 eastbound near to junction 14. Officers attended the scene and found that the incident involved two cars, a blue Vauxhall Corsa and a silver Vauxhall Astra.
