Six in ten young adults rely financially on older generations in their family, aged 65 and over – who support them with the costs of education, travel, and everyday errands like shopping.
Three-quarters (76%) of adults aged 18-40 say that this monetary support from their older relatives is very important, or somewhat important, to them, according to a poll of 2,100 people in this age range.
Almost a quarter (23%) of over-65s provide care to younger relatives, while more than one in five (22%) help out with education-related costs.
