The heartbroken sister of a man allegedly murdered in Fraserburgh has created a fundraiser to pay for the costs of his funeral.
Police were called to reports of a disturbance on Watermill Road in the town at around 6pm on Sunday, June 4. Michael Jenkins, 24, from Cumbria, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Alfie Whelan, 19, has since appeared at court charged with murder.
Now Michael's sister Rachel Porter is fundraising to bring him to home to Cumbria and lay his body to rest. She described how Michael hadn't always had it easy in life but remained 'kind, loving, loyal and funny.'
Rachel said: "I am setting this fundraiser up as my brother, Michael Jenkins, was sadly taken from us suddenly in Scotland and we need to bring him home to lay him to rest and give him the send of he deserves.
"I have had a lot of kind messages to say that his friends and loved ones want to contribute to it, which is very generous and much appreciated.
"Michael, to all who knew him, was a kind, loving, loyal, funny lad who you couldn’t help but love every inch of him once you’d met him. Michael hasn’t always had it easy during his short life but he has showed the world so much kindness and love."
Police Scotland released a statement from Michael's brother yesterday.
He said: "Where to start. I am so grateful that you were such a massive part of my life for so long, I feel honoured and privileged to be able to call you my brother. There is a whole town in mourning, and the saddest part of all is you probably didn’t realise how loved you were.
"I’d like to tell people the amazing side of Michael, the lad who devoted his time and love to the people he cared for, he would come running whenever you called his name, he would pick you up when you fell, and he was always there to give you a great big cuddle, whenever you needed one.
Michael was in Scotland for work last week when he was found badly injured by police. This sparked a huge response from the emergency services and an air ambulance attended but sadly the 24-year-old could not be saved.
On Wednesday, June, 7, Alfie Whelan appeared before Peterhead Sheriff Court accused of Michael's murder.
He made no plea and was remanded in custody. Whelan also faces two other charges, one under the Misuse of Drugs Act, and one under the Sexual Offences Scotland Act.
The fundraiser has brought in £1700 since it was created last night. To donate click here.
