Sir Paul McCartney moved by unseen footage of late wife in new film

Sir Paul McCartney has hailed his new documentary, Man On The Run, as "wonderful" for allowing him to see "so much of" his late wife, Linda.

The film, which launched Friday on Prime Video, offers an intimate look at the formation of his post-Beatles band, Wings, with Linda, who died of cancer in 1998. It features unseen footage and archive material alongside fresh interviews.

Sir Paul shared on his website: "It’s crazy; like a period of my life flashing before my eyes. It’s wonderful because it’s full of different emotions and facets. One of the big things for me is seeing so much of Linda, which is great for the kids and me."

The couple married in 1969 and had three children: photographer Mary, fashion designer Stella, and singer-songwriter James.

Following The Beatles' 1970 split, Sir Paul and Linda co-founded Wings in 1971 with former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine.

The band released seven studio albums, including 1973's Band On The Run, achieving 12 UK top 10 singles – notably a number one with Mull Of Kintyre – and eight UK top 10 albums before their 1981 disbandment.

Wings are remembered for hits such as Jet, Silly Love Songs, and the iconic 1973 James Bond theme Live And Let Die. Sir Paul reflected on the band's journey: "Overall, it’s a success story. The big question after The Beatles was: How do you follow that? Do you not bother? Or if you try, how? I think we did it in a particularly madcap way, and that’s what’s good about the film, it shows how we pulled it off."

It comes after Paul and Linda’s daughter, Stella, opened up about how hurt her mother was by the bullying she received from fans of her husband at the height of The Beatles’ fame.

Having previously worked as a photographer, whose images had appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone, Linda didn’t come from a musical background, but sang and played keys in the group. As a result, she faced criticism from fans who questioned her inclusion and whether she was a deserving member of Wings.

“She wasn't a cookie-cutter example of someone you put in a band. What they, and she especially, had to go through, like when they isolated her voice and ridiculed her? I mean, it breaks my heart,” she said. “I know that there was pain there. I knew she hurt. She wasn't cold.”

Man On The Run is available on Prime Video.
