Sir Michael Caine's gold Rolex sells for £125,000 at auction

National treasure Sir Michael Caine has put his own private trove of mementoes up for auction, with one gold Rolex selling for £125,250.

The Oscar winner, 88, and his wife Shakira decided to put film souvenirs, artwork, furniture and jewellery up for sale as they are downsizing their home.

A 1977 oil painting by English artist John Bratby, which was expected to fetch £3,000, sold for £31,500. A pair of specs, estimated at £400-600, went for £16,500.

Sir Michael’s own Indian rosewood desk fetched £10,000, and a poster from his 1964 film Zulu made £11,500.

Another portrait by English painter Lincoln Townley sold for £19,000, with proceeds going to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

A director’s chair from the 1971 crime film Get Carter also went for £5,000 at Bonhams in London on Wednesday.

A £4,000 poster for 1966 movie Alfie, which earned him an Oscar nomination, was included in items from his seven-decade screen career. Two signed posters, for 1969 hits Battle Of Britain and The Italian Job, sold for £4,500 and £8,500 each.

NSPCC chief executive Sir Peter Wanless said: “We’re absolutely delighted.”
