Sir Keir Starmer enjoys Wimbledon after tumultuous day in Westminster

Sir Keir Starmer has been spotted enjoying a day out at Wimbledon on Thursday.

The Labour leader was joined by his wife Victoria as the pair watched the women’s singles semi-finals from the Royal Box on Centre Court.

It comes on a tumultuous day in politics, as prime minister Boris Johnson sensationally announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party.

The Labour leader appeared to have put the high drama of Westminster aside as he watched number two seed Ons Jabeur battle it out with Germany’s Tatjana Maria for a place in the final on Saturday.

He smiled and clapped as the match got under way.

Later in the day, Romania’s Simona Halep will face Russian-born tennis player Elena Rybakina in the second semi-final match.

Just hours earlier, Sir Keir was calling for his rival Mr Johnson to be removed from office immediately, saying he should not be allowed to linger in office until a new Conservative leader is elected.

Threatening to use a Commons vote of no confidence procedure to to oust the prime minister unless he hands over the reins to another premier imminitely, he said: “He needs to go completely. None of this nonsense about clinging on for a few months.

“He’s inflicted lies, fraud and chaos in the country.

“We’re stuck with a government which isn’t functioning in the middle of a cost of living crisis.

“And all of those that have been propping him up should be utterly ashamed of themselves.”

He added: “His own party have finally concluded that he’s unfit to be Prime Minister, they can’t now inflict him on the country for the next few months.

“It’s obvious he’s unfit to be Prime Minister. That’s been blindingly obvious for a very, very long time.

“If they don’t get rid of him then Labour will step up, in the national interest, and bring a vote of no confidence because we can’t go on with this Prime Minister clinging on for months and months to come.”
