Sir Billy Boston death: Rugby League legend dies, aged 92

  • Rugby league legend Sir Billy Boston, a pioneer for black players in the sport, has died at the age of 92.
  • Boston was the first rugby league player to be knighted, receiving the honour in 2025 after a trailblazing career.
  • Across his career with Wigan Warriors and Great Britain, he scored a British-record 571 tries and won three Challenge Cups as well as the 1960 World Cup.
  • Inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame in 1988, Boston is commemorated with statues in Cardiff, Wigan, and at Wembley Stadium.
  • Tributes have poured in from across the sport following his death, which comes just weeks after the passing of his wife, Lady Joan.
