Sir Alex Ferguson's reaction to Man City's thrashing of Man Utd speaks volumes

Sir Alex Ferguson cut a miserable figure from the Etihad director's box after Manchester United were on the wrong end of a 6-3 thumping against Manchester City.

The United legend is a regular presence at Red Devils games both at Old Trafford and on the road. Ferguson didn't need to travel particularly far for Sunday's contest, though looking back he may have preferred to stay at home as Pep Guardiola's side ran riot in the derby.

Both Erling Haaland and Phil Foden bagged hat-tricks, with the scoreline 4-0 in City's favour before the half-time whistle. The pair had a brace each by that stage, before United's marquee summer signing Antony restored some pride with a wondergoal early on in the second-half.

Any faint hope the travelling United fans may have had as a result of that goal was soon quashed after Haaland got his treble, a fantastic left-footed finish that gave David de Gea no chance.

It continued Haaland's absurd run of form in front of goal since he arrived at the Etihad, he now boasts a 14-goal tally - which includes three successive home hat-tricks against Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and United respectively.

Foden scored his third soon after, having been put through on goal by Haaland to put the result beyond any doubt. A brace from Martial helped spare some blushes, but those who were in attendance - including Ferguson, knew United were easily beaten.

The former Red Devils boss wasn't the only famous face that told a story, Cristiano Ronaldo's emotions were crystal clear from just one glance at the 37-year-old forward who was sat on the bench for the entirety of the game.

After the clash, United boss Erik ten Hag made a surprising claim surrounding why he left Ronaldo as an unused substitute during the derby day demolition.

The Dutchman insisted he chose to keep the five-time Ballon d'Or winner on the bench "out of respect for his big career" in a claim that has sparked plenty of discussion among fans already.

In truth, it is unlikely that even Ronaldo would have been able to hold back the tide and stop this City side from running riot. Packed with an array of star-studded attacking talent, Guardiola's troops look like they are desperate to retain their status as champions and lift their fifth league title in six seasons.

The gulf in quality between the two Manchester clubs was on display for all to see and while Ten Hag has recently overseen a brief turnaround in form, United have some way to go before they can be considered on City's level.
