Singapore to fine people for playing loud music and videos on buses

  • Passengers on Singapore buses face fines of up to £294 (S$500) for disruptive behaviour, including playing loud music or videos, littering and eating on board.
  • The new regulations, introduced by the Land Transport Authority, bring public buses in line with existing rules on the city-state's rail network.
  • More serious offences, such as causing a danger or obstruction or soiling transport facilities, carry steeper fines of up to £2,942 (S$5,000).
  • Bus drivers will not enforce the fines directly to ensure they focus on driving safely, with authorised staff instead reporting offences for investigation.
  • The measures reflect a growing global push to reduce noise and anti-social behaviour on public transport, with similar initiatives seen in London , Kraków and Chennai .
