Simon Nixon
Having quit Nottingham University because he found his accountancy degree “boring”, Mr Nixon did not seem the likeliest of candidates for a career in finance.
However, even as a student the now 55-year-old was clear in what he wanted and from his dormitory launched a service alongside finance friend Duncan Cameron to provide mortgage information to financial advisors. It was called Mortgage 2000 but found more success when it moved online and was renamed MoneySupermarket.com
The business has since developed to also provide advice on personal loan and credit card deals. Mr Nixon became a billionaire but has remained close to his roots in Chester despite complaining the British weather can be “bloody awful”.
But when he does want a getaway, he needs look no further than one of his side businesses Simon Escapes - which offers luxury homes in five of his favourite locations.
