Simon Jordan believes Omonia Nicosia's narrow Europa League defeat to Manchester United should be compared with Rangers 7-1 thrashing by Liverpool in the Champions League.
Neil Lennon's side ran the English giants to the 93rd minute before Scott McTominay fired in a last grasp winner at Old Trafford on Thursday night. And the outspoken talkSPORT pundit was asked if that just shows that anyone can compete with Europe's big clubs.
But Jordan reckons the stats say it all with Erik ten Hag's men dominating in every department and the Cypriot side had goalkeeper Francis Uzoho to thank for the scoreline remaining so tight. It came after Lennon's club played out a 3-2 thriller with the Red Devils the previous week - again on the losing side by a single goal. And Jordan said: "First of all it's the Europa League, not the Champions League. Secondly, Manchester United had eighty per cent possession, 34 shots on goal. .
"Liverpool had 20 shots on goal against Rangers and seven of them went in. Rangers competed against Liverpool and lost 2-0, Omonia lost 3-2. Liverpool bashed Rangers up at Ibrox but Man United had 34 shots and a goalkeeper who saved everything
"You had players coming round like Ronaldo patting the goalkeeper on the back for his performance I think that tells you the answer that if it wasn't for the goalkeeper that could have been 7-0. The Scottish goalkeeper (Allan McGregor) picked two or three out that I thought he should've done better with so all things being equal we can bash the Scottish clubs or we can look at it realistically and say that's comparing apples and oranges. 34 shots on goal and 80% and we are going to turn around and say Omonia competed with those stats."
Despite their struggles, both Rangers and Celtic still have clim chances of finishing third in their retrospective groups and gaining Europa League knockout stage football after Christmas if they can pick up favourable results in their final two matchday's at Europe's top table.
