TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has criticised West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan for their pursuit of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
The Hammers reportedly made a bid of £50 million for Phillips over the weekend as they look to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.
Phillips has been the subject of interest from a number of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, including the Manchester clubs and Liverpool, however news of West Ham’s bid came out of the blue.
In fact, it was reported at the back end of last week that they had also submitted a bid of £50 million for Whites winger Raphinha, which was also turned down.
And speaking on talkSPORTthis morning, former Crystal Palace owner Jordan has questioned whether the Hammers ever actually submitted the bid for Phillips with any expectation that it was going to be accepted.
He also claimed that during his time as owner at Selhurst Park, that this was standard procedure for Sullivan, in order to portray himself in a positive light in the media to supporters.
He said: “First of all, the players got two and a half years left on his contract. This is a standard way of operating for Sullivan. Who in God’s name told them that Kalvin Phillips was ready to go to West Ham and wants to go to West Ham?
“And on what basis have they gone in for a £50 million player that was never going to go in the first place. We can all bid for players and make sure the media are aware of our ambitions without actually being able to conclude them.”
