Simon Jordan revisits Newcastle takeover gaffe amid Diego Carlos transfer question

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has poked fun at his Newcastle United takeover gaffe after being asked about the transfer links to Diego Carlos.

The talkSPORT presenter has regularly angered the Magpies fanbase in recent seasons with his defences of former head coach Steve Bruce and his views on the club's takeover saga.

Jordan labelled the attempt by the Saudi-backed consortium to force through a sale was 'deader than a dead thing from dead land' on September 29 last year.

Eight days later, the Premier League confirmed the takeover had been given the green light and Mike Ashley's turbulent 14-year tenure on Tyneside had come to an end.

It is a declaration which Jordan has been regularly reminded of since, and the 53-year-old has accepted he was wrong and previously posed for a picture with a t-shirt trolling this prediction.

The new owners have quickly got to work at St James' Park, and are actively attempting to strengthen Eddie Howe's side in the closing days of the January window following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Newcastle have been frustrated in their pursuit of a number of targets, and a move for Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos currently looks set to end in failure.

It led one United supporter to cheekily ask Jordan on social media to declare the Carlos deal as 'dead', hoping it would lead to a deal being quickly struck.

The post drew a response from the talkSPORT host, who has stressed his view that Howe's side will avoid relegation despite their current predicament.

Jordan replied: "Ok how about this … Any fears of #nufc getting relegated now are 'deader than a dead thing from dead land'."

It was a post which inevitably drew replies from Newcastle fans, many of whom praised the presenter for accepting the jibe in good humour.

One supporter wrote: "Very good Simon, you see you don’t have to be hated all the time."

Another fan joked: "You're right. Pushing for Europe I would say."
