Simon Jordan makes Newcastle United top six claim of 'real intrigue' that supporters disagree with

Simon Jordan claims it'll take two or three years until Newcastle United start to deliver their true potential after last year's takeover. The Saudi led takeover made the Magpies the richest club in world football but Financial Fair Play limits what Eddie Howe's side can do this summer.

So far this summer they've brought in Matt Targett, Nick Pope and Sven Botman with focus now turning to attacking options further up the pitch. Since the January transfer window the Magpies have completely revamped their back line and it paid dividends as the made an impressive surge up the table in 2022.

Howe's side displayed form that would have seen them qualify for Europe if they had sustained that all season. However, despite some impressive results, Newcastle fans know their squad needs further additions and time on the training pitch until they're competing with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for honours.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said: "I think Newcastle will take two or three years to start to deliver their potential and what that potential will look like is difficult to say. Because if there's an argument - they're going to have to go some, they're really going to have to go some to get to the standards - when Man City started the engines in 2008, look at the difference in the competition that's now rivalling Man City and how Man City have gone on.

"There's a hell of a difference between Man City in 2008 and buying Robinho and Manchester City in 2022. Look at Liverpool's evolution, Tottenham I think are going to be a threat and Chelsea I think will always be a threat. Man United are going to wake up out of their slumber and eventually get themselves going.

"Newcastle add a real intrigue to the conversation because of all the bad press that's gone with them previously about Mike Ashley's ownership and the expectation of that particular fanbase and the opportunity with this ownership model. But, I still think they've got some really, really hard yards before they get anywhere near the top six."

Newcastle fans did not buy into Jordan's way of thinking, with some claiming that even two to three years is ambitious. Here's what they had to say in response:

@fergue2470 said: "The majority of Toon fans will be happy with us aiming for top 10 finish and decent cup runs, even a outside chance of getting a spot in the Europa Conference League. Only the media saying that we will be aiming for more."

@cam_galloway tweeted: "I don’t think we’ll get top six for a couple of years at least but I really believe we’re going to surprise a lot of people this season, Eddie’s building something special."

@RyanBenvin said: "We all know that. Not one of us expect or think we will finish top-6, no way."
