Simon Jordan issues response to Newcastle United supporters following Wor Flags banner

Simon Jordan has quipped about Newcastle United supporters’ literacy skills after Wor Flags’ banner mocking the former Crystal Palace owner. A pre-match display before Newcastle United's 5-1 win against Brentford referenced a comment made by the 55-year-old about the Saudi-backed takeover.

Just days before the Premier League approved the deal, Jordan insisted the takeover had zero chance of completion. Mike Ashley - represented by renowned sports lawyer Nick De Marco - had taken the top flight to a public Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) one week previously.

“This idea that Newcastle is going to get bought by this PIF fund is deader than a dead thing from dead land,” Jordan told talkSPORT last year. “It’s only the people that want to keep it running for their own motivations, whether that’s Amanda Staveley because she wants to save face for the Horlicks of a deal she’s manufactured, or whether it’s Newcastle fans because they’re wishing and wanting.

“I don’t expect it (the CAT case) to lead to any particular disclosure. I don’t expect the Premier League to be giving anything that vaguely resembles something that can be made mischief of.

It was Jordan’s “deader than a dead thing from dead land” comment which served as inspiration for the latest pre-match display on Tyneside. One year on from the takeover, Wor Flags - credited with helping the atmosphere return to St James’ Park - unveiled a seismic banner to mark the anniversary of the deal.

The ex-Palace chief could not refrain from firing back at Toon supporters when quizzed about the flag by co-host Jim White. He said: “I was surprised by that because you said to me ‘it couldn’t have been the Newcastle fans because they can’t spell’. I was surprised to see it so well put together.”

White, who could not wait to remind his co-host of the banner, added: “It is just another in a long series of moments he’s had to do something of a U-turn.”
