Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan believes Rangers' tilt to land Aaron Ramsey on loan is being pushed by their desire to secure Champions League football.
The Ibrox side are in a genuine title fight with rivals Celtic with only two points separating the pair ahead of their blockbuster clash on Wednesday night.
The winners of the Premiership are set to go straight into the group stage of the world's richest club competition next season.
Ramsey is free to leave Juventus and it looks increasingly likely his next destination will be Ibrox.
And Jordan believes Rangers are willing to push ahead with the ambitious coup due to their increased challenge to come out on top this season.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "The SPFL is alive and kicking between Celtic and Rangers. If Celtic win on Wednesday they go top of the league at a very significant time of the season.
"Ramsey going to Rangers, economically, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If you listen to a lot of the rumours, Rangers don't have that much money.
"Now, if you put that into equation you wonder how they are going to afford his wages, but if a player wants to play, and is prepared to come out of the contract and not ask for a ridiculous salary, you can see it.
"The bottom line is you wonder how Rangers, with all due respect to them, will want to pay a significant part of that salary.
"On paper it looks like a great signing, financially, I would struggle to see why Rangers would want to do it.
"The team that wins the SPFL gets straight into the group stage of the Champions League, gets an extra £30million to 40m quid.
"Maybe, that is the reasons behind it, they think 'hang on a second, Celtic are really breathing down our neck now, we need to really make sure we give the new manager some support'.
"If we get a stellar signing that gets us into the Champions League we've paid for it 10 times over by getting £30m extra by being in the group stage."
