Simon Jordan blasts Derby supporters despite "go and burn" EFL verdict

Simon Jordan, the former Crystal Palace owner-turned-pundit, has waded into the Derby County debate.

The Championship side are still searching for new owners amid a plethora of off-field concerns. The club have been in administration since September and are saddled with debts and operating under a transfer embargo.

Many supporters blame former owner Mel Morris whilst others point the finger at the English Football League (EFL).

On Monday night the EFL released a lengthy statement, addressing a number of issues involving the two parties.

Chief executive Trevor Birch sought to put the record straight, saying: "Suggestions the EFL want Derby County relegated or expelled are completely fabricated and entirely false.... the EFL has no vendetta against any of its member clubs."

Can Derby pull off the unthinkable and survive this season? Let us know in the comments

Now, speaking on his regular appearance on radio station talkSPORT , Jordan has risked the ire of Derby fans by saying "there's no point suggesting the EFL have got a conspiracy".

He said: "I'm sorry, Derby fans, but unfortunately once upon a time, you liked Mel (Morris).

"You allowed Mel, to some extent, to run your football club - not that you could do much about it.

"The sins of Mel, as much as I like him, are being visited on a bad process.

"I really think Derby fans are not helping by becoming enraged by the processes because the processes are the processes. And it was your owner that put you into this.

"There's no point barking at the moon. There's no point suggesting the EFL have got a conspiracy.

"You know my view of the EFL. With the exception of Trevor Birch, they can all go and burn. But the bottom line is that the EFL are not sitting here trying to liquidate this club.

"There are opportunities for them to involve themselves in certain situations but they cannot circumvent an arbitration process so one club's caught up on another."

Derby's administrators are said to be working with three separate bidders, with former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley weighing up a move for the club.

In a statement taking the form of a Q&A Birch said: "It is understood that Derby County fans will be concerned at developments at their Club, but equally the League must consider the interests of all other Clubs.

"Clearly there is a balance between investment into our Clubs and not stifling ambition, but that cannot be at any cost. That is why financial rules are in place that all Clubs agree to, and the EFL are tasked with upholding and sanctioning any breaches."

He added that the EFL is committed to resolving “a complex legal position".

On the field, Derby are just eight points off safety despite being handed points deductions totalling 21 points this season.

Nevertheless, their squad is down to the bare bones with four players departing in the past week and manager Wayne Rooney blocked from bringing in new signings or extending short-term contracts.
