Jim White has wagered talkSPORT co-host Simon Jordan £1,000 that Newcastle United will finish in the top six next season. Despite failing to win any of their opening 14 games in 2021-22, the Magpies’ form improved drastically as Eddie Howe guided the club towards an 11th-placed finish.
Expectations for the upcoming campaign remain an enigma until United know how their squad will shape up come August. Some Toon supporters believe European football has to be the aim whereas others are more level-headed, pointing towards the top 10 and a possible cup run.
For context, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester United made up the Premier League’s top six last season. Leapfrogging any of English football’s powerhouses would be a statement of intent from the Magpies as they look to become a heavyweight in their own right.
However, White has bullishly backed Newcastle to break up the big boys in 11 months - causing Jordan to react bemusedly. The radio presenter is so confident he was willing to bet £1,000 on his remark... an offer his co-host had no hesitation in accepting.
Here is a transcript of their conversation on talkSPORT.
