Simba Hybrid Essential Topper review: does the mattress topper live up to the hype?

Here’s a fact that may just blow your mind, Brits spend 27 years on average in bed in their lifetime – that’s a whole lot of shut eye and duvet days.

With that in mind, it’s easy to understand the importance in securing a solid mattress and bedding set-up that will encourage you to sink into cloud-like comfort for the eight+ hours that you need to feel refreshed. After all, a good night’s sleep is essential in all parts of our lives from our health to the proper functioning in life and work.

According to the experts, it is recommended that you change your mattress every six years. A lumpy and uncomfortable option can lead to muscle, back and joint pain, while the lack of sleep can lead to serious health conditions. But if you’re reluctant to part with your hard-earned cash in the thousands, there is a solution.

A mattress topper will transform your dozing vessel and with the Hybrid Essential Topper from Simba, you’re incorporating the pioneering sleep label’s expertise into your boudoir at a fraction of the cost (from £299).

Much like the name suggests, it is placed on top of your current mattress to elevate the comfort levels. But this iteration does far more. Here’s what we thought of it.

Delivery and packaging

The bed-in-a-box company lives up to its name and the topper is delivered in a cardboard box that looks like its mattress counterpart – we had to double check the confirmation to make sure we didn’t in fact order a mattress. The product springs into action as soon as it’s released from the vacuum-sealed packaging and is ready to sleep on instantly without needing to wait for it to inflate. There’s simply the box and the plastic wrapping as far as packaging is concerned, which are both recyclable. The delivery is also said to be carbon neutral.

The design

This is not the ineffectual barely-there mattress topper of time gone by. Simba has incorporated its award-winning technologies into this sleep accompaniment to offer the same benefits as the brand’s hybrid mattress.

The combination of memory foam and springs (unusual in a topper) give comfort and support in equal measure. The signature Simbatex® foam is infused with graphite to draw heat away from the body and has an open-cell structure that improves the breathability of your sleep environment unlike traditional versions of this material - something that will be welcome to hot sleepers. It is set alongside 1,500 patented Aerocoil® springs to provide pressure relief for your joints that need it most.

The sleep test

As soon as you set this foam-spring hybrid topper on your bed, you will feel the soft to the touch cover that is also handily machine washable. But the real magic is when you lie down. It is a lovely addition to our bed and is immediately comfortable to lounge on. The Goldilocks feel slightly leans towards the firmer end of the spectrum but will satisfy those looking to sink right into their bed frame. This ensures you are getting the support for your muscles and easing potential back pain without sacrificing on snugness. The hybrid construction gives bounce back to prevent craters in your common sleep spots.

It’s a very practical item with a non-slip base, elastic straps that stop it moving from the mattress as you shift in the night and the depth is just 6.5cm so doesn’t leave you with a Princess & The Pea situation. It also rolls up to a compact size for storage, so you can bring it out for a sofa bed whenever guests sleepover.

Verdict

Without a towering height that makes shopping for sheets a challenge, the Simba The Hybrid Essential Topper manages to pack both memory foam and 1,500 springs within its casing, providing a cosy but firm addition to an uncomfortable or overly soft mattress. It goes against the stereotype of memory foam that usually locks in the heat retention and instead you have a breathable sleep experience. Bring on the summer.
