Developers have announced they've taken over the building which houses the flagship Argos store in Nottingham city centre.
Planning permission was granted last year to redevelop parts of the building in Lower Parliament Street into student flats, with more than 250 beds set to be created above the shop.
The proposals given the green light by the city council involve the demolition of a storage building at the back, with the wider building set to be refurbished.
While the application has gone through the planning process, retailer Argos has said it remained committed to its flagship shop.
In November, the company said: "We have not current plans to close our Lower Parliament Street store."
Since then, developer Unite Students - a firm which owns multiple large housing blocks and is in the progress of building more in the city - confirmed it had bought the site.
The student complex will include a mixture of cluster and studio flats and the development will be L-shaped.
The development is expected to cost £34m.
Nick Hayes, group property director of Unite Students, said: “Through this opportunity we are able to cater for the increased number of students wanting to attend the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, both located in a growing regional city."
The company already owns and manages 1,900 student bedrooms in Nottingham with a further 970 beds.
It is also behind a huge new student complex in Derby Road to redevelop the former Toyota showroom.
Toyota and Lexus relocated to the former Jaguar showroom next door prior to work starting, with Jaguar having moved to new premises in Enterprise Way.
The Argos in Lower Parliament Street is currently the company's only store in the city centre.
Argos' former shop in the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre closed a number of years ago - as the retailer opened in the Sainsbury's supermarket in Castle Boulevard.
An Argos spokesperson said: “A planning application has been granted which involves our Lower Parliament Street store. We’re in close contact with the landlord and we’ll keep our colleagues and customers updated.”
