'Sickening' graffiti on East Belfast greenway condemned

Graffiti which appeared on a wall on the Connswater Greenway has been condemned as "sickening".

The graffiti was written on a wall beside where the greenway meets Mersey Street in East Belfast and said: "Local housing for local people. No Outsiders."

The vandalism was reported to Belfast City Council who said that it would be sending its cleansing team to have it removed.

Titanic Alliance councillor Michelle Kelly condemned the graffiti and said that it was no representative of the inclusive community in East Belfast.

She said: "It is sickening to see this graffiti and it is not at all representative of the East Belfast which is inclusive and welcoming to all. We need to stand up and call out this nonsense."

Last year there were 730 cases of criminal damage and arson reported to police in East Belfast.

July saw the largest number of reported incidents with 41, followed by June with 37.

December had the lowest number of reported cases with 20 incidents.
