Sickening footage shows rats running around Scots gardens as residents demand action

Sickened Lanarkshire residents have hit out after footage showed rats continually running loose in their back court.

The video clips, taken by a local on Kirkwood Street in Rutherglen, show the vermin scampering around near bins at the block of flats.

Fed-up residents say the problem has been going on for months, and are calling on further action from property owners the Link Group.

The housing company say they have laid down rat bait and traps, which has been disputed by some of the people living there.

They are now demanding Link take further action to try and solve the influx of the animals.

One concerned local, who asked not to be named, told Lanarkshire Live: " They've been reported for years but we can't seem to get anything done to actually sort this.

"Link say they have placed rat traps and rat bait out the back but you can still see them all in broad daylight running about, and they're huge rats.

"I've got a wee boy and I'm absolutely petrified for him, especially when it gets the summer and the kids here will be laying outside. It's 2023 and I feel I can't even take things to the bin without being worried.

"I know one of the other people here has heard scratching from inside the walls too.

"I don't think Link have even properly looked at the problem, they just say the rats are not coming from our properties. I feel if they'd addressed this problem years ago it wouldn't the issue it is now."

Residents living there have contacted MP Margaret Ferrier to raise their concerns, and the politician has spoken to Link.

Link insist they have placed rat bait down, and that some of the animals may have already eaten it, which is why the residents living there haven't seen it.

However they have agreed to further meetings with an exterminator in the coming days.

A Link spokesperson said: "We are sorry to hear our tenant continues to experience problems with rats stemming from commercial premises in the vicinity of their home.

"Despite laying traps and operatives filling holes, unfortunately, the issue continues to persist.

"We want to reassure the tenant we are doing everything possible to find a solution and plan to meet with a vermin specialist and the building contractor this week to devise an action plan."
