Showa American Story is difficult to explain without sounding like you're making it up. In an alternate 1991 where Japan's economic boom never collapsed, the country has bought up much of the United States and culturally transformed it, drawing heavily on 1980s aesthetics along the way. A 19-year-old stuntwoman named Chigusa Choko travels to Neo Yokohama (formerly Los Angeles) with her sister for a movie audition, is killed shortly after arriving, and wakes up from the dead in an America overrun by zombies and monsters (Dot Esports). She sets out across the country by motorcycle looking for her missing sister and answers about what happened to her and the world.
NEKCOM and publishers 2P Games and 4Divinity returned with the game's first major new trailer in nearly two years at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, narrated by an anime-obsessed fictional U.S. President and set to an in-game pop track (RPG Site). NEKCOM describes the game, without apparent irony, as a "post-apocalyptic romance RPG" and an "alternate history ensemble period drama" (Tech Times).
