Most of the pregnant women would get this one piece of advice from people: stay away from your pet! No matter whether you are too close to your pets, even the pregnant lady would have a second thought: Should I? Clearing this concern, we have Ira Trivedi, author and yoga expert, shedding light on this years-old debate.
"Most people advise a pregnant lady to stay away from their pets during pregnancy. They say it out of health concerns. But, for me, it was the opposite; having my pet, Miya, helped me a lot during my pregnancy journey. During pregnancy, most ladies go through many hormonal changes, but for me, having my pet near me, playing with her, cuddling her, and all makes me happier," she shares in an exclusive chat with ETimes.
However, Ira addressed the concern in a scientific way too.
"During pregnancy, the lady tends to become allergic to certain things. So, make sure to have an allergen test to see whether you have an allergy to the fur of cats or dogs. However, if you already have a pet before pregnancy, you will have many issues during pregnancy. But, if you are planning to have a pet introduced to you while you are carrying, it's better to be a bit cautious about the breed and your allergies," she adds.
Ira also explains that she has taken all the necessary steps to make sure having a pet with her is safe.
"It's good to be a bit cautious when you have a pet during pregnancy, especially in terms of hygiene. Make sure you brush your pet every day and clean their paws. I used to wipe Miya's paws regularly since she goes out. Also, she had the habit of licking my face; as a precaution, I made her stop it. She used to put her tongue in my mouth, so I made sure that stopped. She understood that well, and she now licks my hand, leg, and feet instead. Both of us are fine with it," Ira shared.
