Boxing Day sales are always popular with shoppers who are keen to bag a bargain during the festive season.
Despite the rise in online shopping, high street stores are still busy when it comes to Boxing Day, with many people getting up early to queue outside retailers such as Next, Zara and Cricket. This year, Christmas Day once again falls on a weekend, with Boxing Day sales set to begin on Monday, December 26.
One change this year is that Christmas Day falls on a Sunday and if a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday. This year, the Christmas Day bank holiday will be observed on December 27. Similarly, the New Year's Day bank holiday will not be held on January 1, but rather January 2.

Some supermarkets have already started to announce which days they will be closing so customers and employees can begin to make plans for the festive season. Below, we’ve taken a look at the announcements so far.
Home Bargains
Discount store Home Bargains has confirmed it will close all of its branches for three days over the Christmas period. The retailer will be closing all of its stores on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day to allow staff to enjoy the festivities with their loved ones.
The store will also be closing at the earlier time of 5pm on Christmas Eve. In a statement posted on Facebook, Home Bargains said: "All of our stores will be closing for Boxing Day and New Year's Day. We would like to thank all our staff for how hard you have worked this past year, and want you to relax and enjoy the Christmas break with your loved ones"
Aldi
Aldi has confirmed it will close all stores for two days over the Christmas period to give its staff a well deserved break. The supermarket giant has confirmed that all stores will be closed on Boxing Day again this year in order to thank staff for their hard work.
Aldi is set to create around 3,000 new jobs ahead of the festive season as it gears up for its “biggest ever” Christmas. Kelly Stokes, recruitment director at Aldi UK, said: “This year we’re recruiting more people than ever over the Christmas period to support the growing number of customers that are switching to Aldi.
“That includes a mix of temporary and permanent positions, as well as looking to fill both in-store roles and positions at our Regional Distribution Centres. Our amazing colleagues play a vital role in keeping our shelves stocked year-round which is why, once again, we’ll also be keeping our stores closed on Boxing Day as a thank you for all of their hard work.”
Iceland and The Food Warehouse
Frozen food retailers Iceland and The Food Warehouse have announced they will be closing their doors on Boxing Day this year. Richard Walker, Iceland's managing director, took to Twitter to share the news.
He said: "We'll be closing all our Iceland and Food Warehouse stores on Boxing Day, to give our colleagues a well-earned rest with their friends & families."
More supermarkets and retailers are expected to announce their 2022 festive opening times in the coming weeks.
