A major shopping centre has announced its dog-friendly status and invited pooches inside for the very first time - but it's caused quite a stir in the dog community. Silverburn in Glasgow shared the news of its trial period and stated that it now has water bowls and waste bag stations located throughout the mall to welcome pet owners.
A selection of retailers will also have paw print vinyl stickers on their windows to indicate dogs are allowed inside, including H&M, Waterstones, The Fragrance Shop, Paperchase, and Krispy Kreme. While the new rules have been praised by many avid shoppers, others believe it is "crazy" and could pose a "huge problem" for people with allergies or fears.
Pet owner Millie Reeves told the Mirror : "I'm on the fence with the decision to make a shopping centre in Glasgow dog-friendly. I am a dog owner and I love meeting dogs when out and about but a shopping centre is not the place for a dog.
"Not only is there the argument that a lot of people don't want dogs everywhere they go, especially at eateries, but also that a busy shopping centre can be stressful for a dog.
"I think there is a real difference between taking your dog for a walk to a park where your sole purpose is to spend time stimulating and exercising your dog, and dragging your dog out while you go clothes shopping."
A fellow TeamDogs reader believed "only well-behaved dogs with sensible owners" should be allowed inside.
Another person applauded the announcement but admitted she wouldn't take her own, as "they'd be terrified and overwhelmed by the noise and people".
The decision to allow dogs through the doors sparked a massive debate amongst Glasgow Live readers too.
One reader praised it and said: "That's amazing news for dogs to come to Silverburn shopping Centre I give that 10 out of 10."
A second thought it was a smart business move, writing: "Great idea. If dog owners can take their dog's shopping they will not have to hurry home. They will stay out longer and spend more money in the struggling shops. I'm all for dog-friendly shop."
However, many were concerned by the news, pointing out that some shoppers are allergic or scared of dogs.
One disgruntled reader said: "This is just crazy. Not everyone are dog lovers. I know people who are frightened of dogs, myself being one of them.
"How are they going to clean up any mess the dogs do or are people going to be sliding on dog wee or even worse dog poo."
A pup owner wrote: "Love the idea of dog-friendly places but I don't think I'd drag my dog through the shopping centre, 1 people could have allergies to dogs and 2 come on let's face it what dog doesn't like to mark its territory and this could be a huge problem."
David Pierotti, general manager of Silverburn, said as part of the announcement: "We pride ourselves on being a destination that is inclusive for all, and considering the 10 percent rise in dog ownership in recent years we wanted to trial opening our doors to everyone in the family, which includes some of the best-behaved dogs out there.
"This new policy allows visitors to shop, eat and relax at Silverburn alongside their canine companion without the anxiety of leaving them behind.
"When asked, over 80 percent of our customers welcomed the concept so we're excited to make this addition and will continue to monitor feedback throughout the trial period."
