Shop targeted by cheeky graffiti vandals who tell council workers where to paint next

A shop in Paisley's Foxbar neighbourhood has been targeted by spray painters for the fifth time in a week as the local community start to vent their concerns about the consistent vandalism.

The gable end in Lochaline Avenue is being ruined by graffiti, and residents and shop owners are growing frustrated by the constant vandalism of the building.

The graffiti that has appeared on the building this time says “Paint here - Varney” and also “Varney was here”.

Paisley Southwest Councillor Stephen Burns said residents have been getting in touch with him.

“I have no idea who is responsible for this graffiti, however, it is not a very nice situation to be in. I have had complaints from local residents come in about this and the council are dealing with the situation.

“In the last week, the council has come out and painted over the wall five times, with it happening twice in one day once," he explained.

Councillor Burns says the shop in question - Day-Today grocery store - has been at the centre of vandalism before and during lockdown the building would be regularly covered in graffiti.

He added: "The number of times this has happened I have had to contact the council every time and ask them to come out and paint it. It is not fair on the community, the council and the shop owner."

Hair salon Hair Care has been in the area for 25 years and staff are disappointed by the area being vandalised. A spokesperson from the shop said:

One staff member said: "It is disappointing to see the area get vandalised as it is a lovely area. We have been here for 25 years and we don't like to see this thing happen. It just is really sad to see."

A spokesman for Renfrewshire Council said: "We and local police are aware of issues with graffiti at this address and our teams have attended to remove it on a number of occasions.

“Graffiti is damaging to our communities. If you see graffiti which needs removed, you can report it to us online via our MyAccount service on https://myaccount.renfrewshire.gov.uk/service/Tell_us_about_graffiti or by calling 0300 300 0300.”
