Shop claiming to sell Ireland's biggest 99 ice cream goes viral as some hit out at price

A filling station in Meath is claiming that they sell Ireland’s biggest 99 ice cream and is selling thousands a week after going viral.

Sean Gaughan has worked at Currans’ Service Station in Ross Cross, Meath for three years and said the monster cone started off as a competition between employees.

Describing how the cone came to be, Gaughan said: “It was just a matter of seeing who could make one bigger and we started selling them then as their own thing."

The cone is pulled by eye, and Gaughan said the biggest so far was a foot-long.

The Big Boy, as its affectionately called, costs €4 with a flake and €3.60 without a flake. “When you get it, you’ll understand why it costs so much,” he said.

The ice cream machine is never off at Currans’ Service Station, Gaughan said.

“During the week, we probably sell about 200-300 a day on weekdays and on the weekends it’s about 500 a day,” he said, before adding that the shop can be a “bit mental” at times.

The ice cream has gone viral through word of mouth, with Gaughan saying they don’t even advertise “The Big Boy.”

Gaughan said that people regularly travel from Dublin and occasionally from further afield in search of the monster cone. “People just kind of know, we’ve gotten a name for ourselves, especially around the area,” he said.

The cone recently received attention on TikTok where it was sampled by Thomas Crosse from the @thisiscrossy account. Some people were keen to follow suite and try it while others labelled it a rip off at €4.

One noted, "Normal 99 in my local is €1.60, I’d rather have 2 of those."
