Shooting near US–Mexico border: One critical after Border Patrol-linked incident— what we know

One person was shot and is in critical condition after a shooting near the US–Mexico border in Arizona on Tuesday, officials said, reported Associated Press.

The incident happened in Arivaca, a small community about 10 miles from the border. Authorities said the shooting involved the US Border Patrol.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said it is working with the FBI and US Customs and Border Protection to investigate what happened.

Emergency crews from the Santa Rita Fire District reached the spot and gave medical help to the injured person, who was later taken into custody.

The fire district said the person was then flown by a medical helicopter to a regional trauma centre for urgent treatment.

The FBI later said federal agents were trying to arrest a 34-year-old man from Arizona, involved in a smuggling operation near Arivaca, Arizona, when he fired at a Border Patrol helicopter and at the agents. The agents returned fire, striking and wounding him, the FBI added.
