'Shocking' - Steven Pienaar offers blunt assessment of Everton plight

Former Everton favourite Steven Pienaar has weighed in on the club’s current struggles.

The Blues suffered another defeat at the weekend, going down 1-0 at home to Wolves to see their losing streak in the Premier League extend to four matches and leave them above the relegation places on goal difference only.

The defeat to Wolves came less than a week after Everton lost 5-0 away to Tottenham Hotspur - and it’s those two results that Pienaar has focused on.

VERDICT: What happened at final whistle shows terrifying reality of Everton situation

The South African, who made 229 appearances across two spells with the Blues, thinks it’s “shocking” to see the club where it is in the table.

And Pienaar went on to criticise Everton’s transfer policy.

"There are so many players with a lot of quality but I think Everton have bought players for the sake of buying them,” Pienaar told BBC 5Live.

He added: "It is hard to see how they are in the place they are with players who have so much quality.

“It is shocking to see them fighting at the bottom of the table.

"If they play like they did against Spurs, it's going to be very hard [for them to stay up]."
