Shocking pictures of civilians lying dead or injured in the street have emerged from the town of Irpin in Ukraine.
The images prove that Russian forces are targeting highly populated areas.
Three Ukrainians died after Russian forces shelled a damaged bridge in Irpin they were using to escape.
The victims included two children who were members of the same family, according to multiple reports.
A stream of refugees from Kyiv with pets and children had crossed the Irpin River on Saturday, using an improvised path under a bridge destroyed by a Russian airstrike.
Harrowing photographs showed dead bodies lying on the streets of Irpin - though it is not clear if they are the three victims of the Russian attack.
The Standard has chosen not to print the pictures.
The New York Times reported that a group of civilians fleeing the capital, assisted by Ukrainian soldiers, had attempted to run over the bridge when Russian forces began to launch mortar fire.
One shell which landed in the street hit a family, including a mother, a father, a teenage son and a daughter, according to the newspaper. The woman and children were later pronounced dead.
Irpin, which lies 16 miles northwest of Kyiv, has been the target of a Russian bombardment in recent days.
Kyiv has been spared the worst of the fighting so far, but intense battles have raged in surrounding towns and villages.
Video provided by Ukraine’s armed forces taken on Saturday in the Kyiv region, showed Ukrainian efforts to defend the capital, with piles of sandbags and concrete slabs laid across a main road.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said today that there are “very credible reports” that Russia has committed war crimes during its invasion of Ukraine - particularly in attacking civilians.
The World Health Organisation have also said health facilities are being attacked, causing deaths and injuries.
Meanwhile, a second attempt to evacuate civilians from Mariupol failed on Sunday due to Russian shelling, the city council has said.
Ukrainian authorities said that Russia had bombed the “green corridor” just 45 minutes after a ceasefire was announced.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken claimed that Washington had seen “very credible reports” of deliberate attacks on Ukrainian civilians by Russian forces.
Ukrainian authorities last week claimed that over 2,000 civilians have been killed so far during the invasion.
