Shocking footage of an outbreak of violence at the world-famous Selfridges department store in which two men were stabbed has been released for the first time.
A mannequin was hurled across the aisles and one of the men armed himself with a rope as a fight broke out between two rival groups on May 8, 2021.
The incident left Ryheem Lindsay, 20, and Bryan Carvalho, 22, both needing hospital treatment for stab wounds to their legs, allegedly inflicted on each other in the brawl.
Prosecutor Robert Brown told Southwark crown court that Andre Deer, 20, is accused of delivering a “flying kick” as the violence moved from the shop floor to a corridor leading to the toilets.
Maliq Knox-Hooke-Campbell, 22, Deer, and Marlon Duggan, 38, all allegedly kicked Carvalho after he had been knocked to the ground, before Lindsay is said to have been caught on camera “slashing” at him with a knife.
Commentating on the footage, DC Carlos Hernandez said defendant Kemani Duggan, 21, is seen “throwing the mannequin in the direction where Mr Carvalho was at”, when violence first broke out.
“There was social media footage that came to police attention, and which we have managed to capture, to show what’s happened in the incident.”
The officer said the defendants were identified by the clothing they were wearing when they were arrested leaving Selfridges, or in the cases of Carvalho and Lindsay when they were being treated for their wounds.
He said in the footage Javani Best, 23, is “holding a rope that he has picked up”, and is seen “swinging that rope towards Mr Carvalho”.
Later in the CCTV footage, it is alleged Carvalho was stabbed by Lindsay: “It appears Mr Carvalho has been stabbed by Mr Lindsay”, said the officer.
“You can see from his actions he appears to be slashing away.”
Carvalho and Lindsay are both accused of wounding with intent and having an article with a blade or a point.
They, alongside Kemani Duggan, his uncle Marlon, Deer, Knox-Hooke-Campbell, and Best are all accused of violent disorder.
“This was a completely unnecessary outbreak of violence between two groups, in an otherwise crowded public place - Selfridges store”, said Mr Brown, opening the prosecution case.
“There were plenty of escape routes for anyone who wished to avoid the violence, and plenty of staff if anyone needed assistance.
“The violence that followed was completely unlawful and unacceptable, and certainly didn’t need to involve the use of knives.”
He added: “Members of the public were in fear for their own safety because of the actions of these defendants”.
It is said the incident started when Carvalho, who was shopping with his brother, was pushed by Lindsay and then “rushed” by a group of men.
Carvalho and his brother retreated past the store’s escalators, and Carvalho is accused of brandishing a knife in the melee.
“Bryan Carvalho ran out of the toilet corridor, he was kicked on the back by Maliq Knox-Hooke-Campbell, causing him to fall to the ground”, said the prosecutor.
“While on the ground, he was kicked by Maliq Knox-Hooke-Campbell, Andre Deer, Marlon Duggan, and another male.
“Ryheem Lindsay can be seen to bend over him and appeared to make a stabbing motion towards Bryan Carvalho with his right hand.”
Jurors heard a trail of blood was found by police from the scene of the one of the stabbings to the second floor carpark, and officers then recovered a discarded knife.
Lindsay is not in the dock and has been declared unfit to stand trial after undergoing psychiatric assessments.
Marlon Duggan, Knox-Hooke-Campbell, and Best, all from Tottenham, Kemani Duggan, from Highbury, Carvalho, from Bounds Green, and Deer, from Borehamwood, all deny the charges against them.
The trial continues.
