Shock David de Gea to Celtic transfer theory floated

David de Gea has been tipped to make a shock move to Celtic.

Hoops hero Peter Grant has urged his former club to at least ask the question of the Spanish goalkeeper who has been without a team for the last 12 months.

De Gea, 33, left Old Trafford last summer and has been a free agent ever since.

He's been keeping sharp by training with a non-league side in England near where he stays, but he hasn't retired, and clearly still fancies himself to play for another few years.

Joe Hart retired from football in the summer, leaving Brendan Rodgers with no No.1 heading into the new season.

Acquiring a top keeper will be high on his transfer priorities this summer. And Grant believes De Gea could be the answer for the Scottish Premiership champions.

He told GO Radio's Football Show: "I've got to throw one out there. I look at David de Gea, he's been training non-league in England. And I'm thinking 'there's someone like David de Gea there, a club like Celtic, European football. Would that excite him?'

"Okay, it will cost you a few shillings. But if he's not going to the likes of Saudi Arabia, because no doubt that's where he'd get the most money. But if he's taken a year out and all of a sudden wants to get back - big nights at Celtic Park, eight Champions League matches. Would that be something that excites him?

"But that's somebody I'd be looking at. That's the sort of personality you're probably going to have to replace Joe Hart with."

Meanwhile, new information has come to light regarding Celtic's ongoing pursuit of last-season-loanee Paulo Bernardo.

Celtic and the player himself appear keen on making the 22-year-old's stay in Glasgow more permanent, following the Portuguese midfielder's contributions throughout the 2023/24 campaign – so much so, that a deal was seemingly 'close' earlier this week.
