The Dutch ship Koning Willem de Tweede sank in a storm off South Australia nearly 170 years ago. (HANDOUT/SUPPLIED)

The wreck of a Dutch ship that sank off an iconic surf beach nearly 170 years ago has been found after a researcher "nearly rammed his face into it" during an exploratory dive.

The merchant ship Koning Willem de Tweede sank in a storm off Robe, in South Australia's southeast, in 1857, after transporting 400 Chinese miners seeking to make their fortune in the Victorian gold rush.
