Ship seized off coast of UAE and now heading for Iran – what we know

  • The UK Maritime Trading Organisation (UKMTO) reported that an unnamed vessel anchored off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was boarded by "unauthorised personnel" and is currently being sailed towards Iranian waters.
  • The incident took place at 5.45am local time, with the vessel being boarded while anchored 38 nautical miles northeast of the UAE port of Fujairah, near the southern entry of the Strait of Hormuz.
  • This event occurred hours after Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi issued threats against the UAE, accusing it of "collusion" with Israel following claims of a secret visit by Benjamin Netanyahu.
  • Araghchi had warned that such engagement was "unforgivable" and that nations collaborating with Israel in hostile actions against Tehran were taking a "foolish gamble".
  • The boarding also coincides with reports that Iran is strengthening its control over the Strait of Hormuz, having reportedly secured agreements with Iraq and Pakistan for the shipment of oil and liquefied natural gas.
