A cargo vessel has run aground in Egypt’s Suez Canal, a canal services firm said. The vessel, MV Glory, ran aground near the city of Qantara, in the Suez Canal province of Ismailia, according to Leth Agencies.
The firm said canal tugs are trying to refloat the vessel. Satellite tracking data analysed by The Associated Press showed the Glory in a single-lane stretch of the Suez Canal just south of Port Said on the Mediterranean Sea.
A spokesperson for the Canal Authority declined to comment, saying a statement would be released. It is not immediately clear what caused the vessel to run aground. Parts of Egypt including its northern provinces experienced a wave of bad weather on Sunday.
The Joint Coordination Centre listed the Glory as carrying over 65,000 metric tonnes of corn from Ukraine bound for China. The Ever Given blocked the major shipping lane in Egypt for nearly a week in 2022.
The ship was heading for Rotterdam when it ploughed into the sandy bank of a single-lane stretch of the canal on March 23. It was stuck for nearly a week causing one of the biggest traffic jams in shipping history.
Hundreds of ships were delayed as they waited for the canal to be unblocked and some vessels were forced to take the much longer route around the southern tip of Africa.
