Sherwood woman frustrated as burst water pipe creates 'large' stream running past home

A Nottingham woman was left frustrated after a burst water pipe created a "large" stream next to her home. Doris Brown, 80, who lives on Warren Avenue, Sherwood, woke up to water running into her garden after a water pipe broke on December 15.

Severn Trent had intended to repair the burst water pipe, but were forced to reschedule. This left the street partially flooded by the water which flowed day and night for four days.

Ms Brown was angered by the wait for the "urgent" repairs and at the thought of water being wasted. "It started early at 6am on Thursday morning - a neighbour came to me and asked me if everything was alright and I said 'yeah, why', and she said 'have you seen all this water?'

"All the water was in my front at the start of it because it was only a pinprick leak then, so it was coming down on the pavement into my garden. As the morning carried on the leak got worse - we had three points where water was coming through - and it was quite a lot which kept going until now [Sunday evening].

"It went a good way up - one or two neighbours down the bottom of the street said 'where the hell is all this water coming from?' It is fast moving and I had to be careful because when I came out of my gate I had the water coming past and a load of mushy leaves - if you were to tread there I don't know what the consequences would be, I had to try and slide over it.

"People have been coming to look at this water - I think I ought to charge them. It was more than a stream, it was a large amount of water."

Ms Brown said she understood the weather might have contributed to the pipe's failure, but was frustrated by the time it had taken to address the problem. She added: "It made me cross because most of us have been trying to save water. All of this is running down the street - Severn Trent are always going on about saving water - but this has been going on for days.

"I understand that the freezing weather might have affected the pipes. But it seems so laid back when I thought it would be an urgent repair with it going all day and all night."

Severn Trent apologised for the delayed repairs, and for any disruption caused to residents. The company explained repairs had to be postponed due to a member of the crew having to leave the site.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “We are aware of a burst main on Warren Avenue, Nottingham. Our teams have been out to site to make a repair, however unfortunately this was not completed as one of the crew needed to leave due to personal circumstances.

“The repair has been rescheduled for today (Monday) and the team are now on site. We would like to apologise for any disruption caused and we are working to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible.”
