Sherwood neighbours fear reversing off their driveways because of '90mph speeding' on 'horrendously' fast road

Speeding drivers who go 'horrendously' fast are making a road 'hell', according to neighbours.

People living on Perry Road in Sherwood have said that they see and hear motorists routinely break the speed limit on the road, with some claiming drivers reach up to 90 miles per hour.

Locals have spoken out on how the issue makes the street "dangerous", following a Nottinghamshire Police operation to combat drivers breaking the limit in the area.

Michael Rocco, 38, who works for Nottingham City Council and lives in Perry Road, said the road was sometimes "hell".

"It is horrendous, the speeding down here. At night-time you get people going above 50 miles per hour down here," he said.

"People fly through here, three or four times every evening and it is dangerous. They shoot across and you can always hear the cars too.

"I dread reversing off my drive sometimes, people usually park on both sides and then you have people speeding - it is hell."

Another resident on the street claimed they had seen people racing at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour past their home.

Barbara Pollard, 62, who is retired and lives on the road, said: "Sometimes people are coming down here at 90 miles per hour and, because of the road being wide and open, nothing is stopping them - but there is a camera to catch them.

"You can see and hear at home, they race each other and you'll see two cars shoot past.

"They speed down this part of the road and then have to slow down when they get to the school or at the junction."

But nearer to the Seely Primary and Nursery School on Perry Road, people said that measures to slow motorists had made a difference.

Denise Redford, 62, who works at Seely Primary and Nursery School, said: "It is always busy down here because of the school but I cannot say I see much speeding.

"I think the parking is the biggest problem, there's always a load of cars here and I think that's more dangerous than any speeding with all the children that are around.

"Down this side of the road there are bumps and signs everywhere, I haven't heard parents be concerned about it."

Laura McIntyre, 30, a project manager who lives in Perry Road, said: "You do get people speed up in between the bumps and then you hear them slam on the breaks before the next set.

"There's maybe some speeding but I would not say that it has a big speeding problem really.

"It is probably here where they slow down, it is a lot worse past the [Hucknall Road] crossroad towards Sainsbury's."

The recent police operation in the suburb took place on February 8.

Police said: "Officers managed to secure four Traffic Offence Reports (TOR) for speeding that were issued to drivers and a TOR for driving without insurance.

"The operation was carried out on Edwards Lane and Perry Road around school and open spaces with a hope to increase safety for all those attending the schools and using the open spaces."
