The City of Lexington is prepared to award 479-thousand dollars in grants to 12 agencies. Mayor Linda Gorton made the announcement Wednesday, noting council approval is still needed. Two of the grants, worth a total of more than 45-thousand dollars, are set for two new roofs for Shepherd’s House, which operates several housing units for men in recovery. Jerod Thomas is the group’s president and CEO.
“We don't make a ton of money. So things like roofs really set us you know, I can handle a hole in the wall. I can dry I can buy a piece of drywall, I've got that kind of money, but I don't have new roof money.”
If the council approves the grants, the new roofs will go on homes on Fontaine Road and Lyndhurst Place. Thomas said he’s grateful for the city’s continued assistance.
“The mayor, the council, the grant money, the zoning committee every time I have needed something this community has done it for me. And I love Lexington, Kentucky.”
Thomas says his drug and alcohol problems led him to a decade of homelessness in Lexington and he promised God that if he got sober, he’d spend the rest of his life helping people in similar straits.
