Shelbourne's US legend Heather O'Reilly pokes fun at Cristiano Ronaldo with funny comparison

Shelbourne's new big-name recruit Heather O'Reilly made an amusing comparison ahead of making her Champions League bow at 37.

Despite having a glittering CV which includes being a World Cup winner and three-time Olympic champion, she never got a chance to play in Europe's elite competition which was always something which wrangled with her.

It was for that reason that she opted to come out of retirement, having stepped away from the sport to start a family.

In one interview with Second Captains, she revealed she's now living in Portmarnock and loving her Irish odyssey.

And prior to this evening's opening qualifier, she sent out a funny tweet that compared her European prospects with another 37-year-old superstar of the game.

She tweeted: "Heading to go play Champions League at age 37 and Ronaldo isn’t HAO-7."

Of course Twitter being Twitter, a sub-section of Ronaldo super-fans got weirdly sensitive about it but most people enjoyed the joke for what it was.

Another huge name to feature in O'Reilly's story of late is Arsene Wenger as she actually credits him with planting the seed in her head that she could still compete at a high level.

He made the recommendation after seeing her perform at the Soccer Aid charity match which he was part of the coaching staff for.

O'Reilly has now featured a couple of times for Shels in domestic games in her usual right-wing berth and will be hoping to play close to her best in her Champions League bow today away to Slovenian champions Murska Sobota (KO 4:30 PM).

It's a convoluted enough route to the group stages as the qualifiers are based around groups themselves but essentially they'll need to win that and then beat either Icelandic outfit Valur or Armenians Hayasa to progress to the competition proper.
