Last week, Forbes Travel Guide announced its 2024 Star Awards winners, and among them is trailblazing hotelier Sheila Johnson. Johnson, the cofounder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and the first female Black billionaire, is an extraordinary figure in the business world. Not only does she have a stake in the Washington Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics, making her the first Black woman to have principal share in three professional sports teams, but she also leads the Salamander Collection, a highly regarded hospitality brand. One of its properties, Salamander Middleburg, recently received the prestigious triple Five-Star honor from Forbes Travel Guide, a distinction only held by 15 other hotels worldwide.
But behind Johnson's remarkable success lies a personal story of tragedy and perseverance. It wasn't until the release of her memoir, 'Walk Through Fire: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Triumph,' last year that Johnson shared the intimate details of the disappointments and heartbreaks she endured. Through it all, she remained resilient and determined, never giving up on her dreams.
In a recent interview with Forbes Travel Guide, she discusses the essential factors in operating a Five-Star hotel. While there are various components, Johnson emphasizes the significance of people. Keeping employees happy and fostering a sense of consistency, experience, and excellence is crucial for maintaining a Five-Star property.
When asked about Salamander Middleburg's triple Five-Star achievement, Johnson expresses her humility and gratitude. To receive such recognition is an honor and a privilege, leaving her extremely grateful and excited.
Reflecting on the past five years, Johnson acknowledges the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the hospitality industry. Despite the challenges, she commends the industry for its resilience and ability to adapt. However, Johnson also addresses the lack of diversity in African American-owned properties, emphasizing that it stems from a societal issue and the limited opportunities for aspiring owners.
With two stellar properties in the competitive DMV market, Johnson shares what sets Salamander Middleburg and Salamander DC apart from other high-end accommodations in the area. After a decade, Salamander Middleburg has gained recognition for its exceptional service and facilities. On the other hand, Salamander Washington DC, launched 18 months ago, has quickly established itself as a significant player, thanks to its distinctive and diverse luxury hospitality approach.
Moving on to the underrated attractions in Washington D.C., Johnson mentions The Wharf area as a blossoming hotspot that has captured the attention of visitors. Additionally, she highlights the new U.S. Park Police Horse Stables and Education Center, a facility in which she actively participated in raising funds. This facility replaces the previous temporary horse stables built for the 1976 Bicentennial.
Considering Johnson's frequent travel due to her various business and philanthropic endeavors, she shares a few items she never boards a plane without. Her iPad keeps her connected, while a hardback or paperback book allows her to immerse herself in captivating narratives. And of course, a fabulous wrap is always a must-have during her journeys.
Looking ahead to the rest of 2024, Johnson reveals that Salamander Collection has numerous exciting projects in the pipeline. In Middleburg, they are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the resort's opening and witnessing the arrival of the first homeowners in the branded Residences at Salamander community. In Washington D.C., a major enhancement project is underway, which includes renovations to the lobby, spa, suites, and the opening of a new restaurant called Dogon, led by chef Kwame Onwuachi.
Across other Salamander Collection properties, there is no shortage of renovations and relaunches. Aspen Meadows in Colorado has recently completed a beautiful renovation of its Bauhaus-style arrival area and introduced the West End Social restaurant. Innisbrook in Palm Harbor, Florida, is in the final stages of refurbishment and relaunching their Packard's Steakhouse. Half Moon in Jamaica is celebrating 70 years of service and has plans to announce a major project centered around their Rose Hall Villas. Lastly, Hotel Bennett in Charleston is celebrating its fifth anniversary, a testament to its ongoing success.
As we witness Sheila Johnson's continued achievements and the growth of Salamander Collection, it's clear that her trailblazing spirit, resilience, and dedication continue to have a profound impact on the hospitality industry. Her contributions, both personally and professionally, serve as an inspiration to many, and the future looks bright for this extraordinary hotelier.
