The Football League has confirmed Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a further six-point deduction, leaving the beleaguered club rooted to the bottom of the Championship on -10 points.

Reports of the points deduction emerged on Monday morning, with the sanction in regards to the club’s failure to pay players in March, May and June this year, as well as in relation to other non-payments to staff and HMRC. Wednesday were handed a 12-point deduction in October after being placed into administration by former owner Dejphon Chansiri, who has also been banned for being an owner or director of an EFL club for a period of three years.

“Following earlier media reports, the EFL can confirm that Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations, with Mr Dejphon Chansiri prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL Club for a period of three years,” the EFL said in a statement. “While matters remain ongoing in respect of the issues being considered by the independent Club Financial Reporting Unit, for alleged breaches in the 2025-26 season prior to the Club entering administration, the League can confirm that it is not seeking any further points deductions from the Club.

“Separately, the EFL and Sheffield Wednesday remain in discussions regarding its appeal against the fee restriction, which is currently set to run until the end of the winter 2027 transfer window. This is likely to be resolved as part of the Club’s exit from administration.”

Wednesday have won one game all season – a 2-0 victory at Portsmouth on 20 September – and have lost their last four matches, which including a 3-0 defeat to Sheffield United at Hillsborough last month.
