Sheep jailed for three years for killing a woman as animal's owner 'fined in cattle'

A sheep has been sent to prison for three years for killing a woman in a field and will be forced to live with the bereaved family once released.

A court has ruled that the owner of the animal, Duony Manyang Dhal, will also have to hand over five cows to the victim's relatives before losing the guilty livestock after it has served its sentence.

After fatally attacking 45-year-old Adhieu Chaping in Rumbek East, South Sudan, earlier this month, the creature has been punished.

It headbutted the woman repeatedly, breaking her ribs.

The sheep was taken into police custody after she was discovered dead, the force announced.

The town's Major Elijah Mabor explained: “The owner is innocent and the ram is the one who perpetrated the crime so it deserves to be arrested then later on the case shall be forwarded to customary court where the case can be handed amicably."

The animal will spend the next three years in a military camp in Aduel County headquarters in Sudan's Lakes State.

Police told Sudan's Eye Radio : "The ram attacked by hitting her ribs and the old woman died immediately. So this is what happened in Rumbek East in a place called Akuel Yol.

"Our role as police is to provide safety and separate fights. The ram was apprehended and currently under custody at a Police Station of Maleng Agok Payam."

Its owner is counting the cost of the tragedy.

In South Sudan, cows are the "preferred form of currency", according to NPR.

As well as the five cash-earning cows he has been told to part with the sheep that took the woman's life as compensation to the victim's family.

Both the families have signed a contract to formalise the agreement with community leaders acting as witnesses, LADbible reports.

It's not the only time a frantic sheep has caused a person's death.

Last year, a woman in the United States also lost her life after being attacked at a farm.

Kim Taylor, 73, couldn't be saved after working as a volunteer at the Cultivate Care Farms in Bolton, Massachusetts.

She went into cardiac arrest shortly before the emergency services arrived, it was reported.
