Shay Given claims Liverpool star is like Roy Keane after 'fans were on his back'

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been compared to former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane.

That’s the opinion of ex-Newcastle United and Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given, who played with Keane for the Republic of Ireland.

Henderson appears to have a very different on-field personality to Keane, who led United to multiple major honours at home and abroad during the club’s heyday.

But Given does see similarities between his old team-mate and Henderson, who last weekend became the first Liverpool captain to win the FA Cup along with the Premier League, Champions League, League Cup, Club World Cup and Super Cup for the club..

“Look at Arsenal (in their 2-0 defeat at Newcastle on Monday), they haven’t enough leaders on the pitch,” said Given to Premier League productions.

“But Jordan Henderson strikes me as a person, who off the pitch and on the pitch, you can see him shouting.

“I played with Roy Keane with Ireland. Making demands with people around you, get the best out of the people and pull people in.

“Even himself (Henderson), he has been on a bit of a journey. When Kenny Dalglish first signed him, the fans were on his back, but he has lifted six major trophies, it’s just a phenomenal journey.”

Henderson now has his sights on leading Liverpool to an unprecedented quadruple.

The FA Cup and League Cup winners welcome Wolves to Anfield for their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday knowing victory could see them secure the title - as long as Manchester City also drop points at home to Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa.

Gerrard, of course, captained Liverpool before Henderson, who will then lead his side out in Paris on May 28 in the Champions League final against Real Madrid.
