Shaun Maloney reveals Ryan Porteous conversations and confirms he will be available to face Celtic

Ryan Porteous will be available for Hibs this weekend despite off-field incidents over the past week.

The defender was allegedly involved in an incident outside a Midlothian bar in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A female was reportedly hit with a plastic tumbler after it was thrown and taken to hospital.

Porteous was apparently shown in doorbell camera footage as a part of a group outside a Dalkeith property, with one appearing to steal a wreath off the front door.

The centre back will be included in the Hibees' squad that takes on Celtic in the Premiership this Sunday

But Maloney explained he’s spoken to Porteous about his responsibilities both on and off the park.

“He’ll be available,” Maloney told Sky Sports. “I’ve had a lot of conversations with Ryan over the last couple of days. I don’t want to say too much but he’s aware of the responsibilities he has and how he has to behave on and off the pitch.”

Hibs moved to fourth in the table after last weekend’s 2-0 win over Ross County at Easter Road, and believes momentum is starting to build after a sticky run of form.

“The last two performances have been good,” he said. "Arbroath was a really important match and against Ross County, we played very well.

“Momentum is a big thing in football and we want to keep it going and show real desire again. The mentality has to be right, but we’re really looking forward to it.”

Sunday’s opponents are in Europa Conference League action away to Bodo/Glimt tonight as they look to turn around a 3-1 deficit from the first leg.

Having been in the exact same situation as a Hoops player himself, Maloney accepts that Euro hangovers are possible, but can also provide extra motivation on a return to domestic duty.

“It can work both ways,“ he said. “They could have a really positive result, but they’re used to it. That club’s played in Europe a lot over the last few years so they’re used to the travel then playing again domestically.

“So I don’t see that having a big impact on the game.”

Hibs lost 2-0 at Celtic Park last month and Maloney acknowledged that his team needs to improve on their display that night.

He added: “We need to improve on that game. In possession at times we were OK, but we need to be a lot more clinical with our chances and create more than we did at Celtic Park.

“Out of possession, we need to be more aggressive and limit the opportunities they have, because they had a few in the first half.

“But we’re in a better place. Unfortunately we’ve still got some injuries and we have to rely on some young players, but we have to go again and it’s a great challenge for them.”
