William Shatner and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, have revealed they were battling separate stage 4 cancers at the same time, a difficult chapter that ultimately ended with both being declared cancer-free.
The 95-year-old Star Trek actor was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma in June 2023 after a growing lump on his cheek was removed. The cancer had spread to his lungs and brain, and he underwent surgery followed by two years of immunotherapy.
His daughter, 61, had already been undergoing treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer. She discovered a small lump in her breast in 2022 despite having a clear mammogram five months earlier. Further testing showed the cancer had spread to lymph nodes in her chest.
The father and daughter recently shared their experiences in an interview with People, describing how they supported each other through chemotherapy, surgery and other treatments. Both were declared cancer-free by late 2024.
Their story also highlights how advances in cancer treatment, including immunotherapy and targeted therapies, are changing the outlook for some people diagnosed with advanced disease.
How William Shatner's Stage 4 Melanoma Was Treated
Shatner's melanoma was diagnosed after a lump on his cheek continued to grow. A doctor friend urged him to have the mass removed, leading to the diagnosis.
Following surgery, Shatner received two years of immunotherapy aimed at treating cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain.
According to oncologist Dr. Omid Hamid, who helped develop the immunotherapy used in Shatner's treatment, the drugs work by blocking signals that suppress the immune system. This allows immune cells to better recognize and attack cancer cells.
"There are multiple combinations of this therapy that are now standard. It's very tolerable in older patients. He's doing phenomenally well," Hamid said.
Immunotherapy has significantly changed treatment for advanced melanoma. While stage 4 melanoma remains a serious diagnosis, newer therapies have helped some patients achieve long-term disease control and, in some cases, no detectable evidence of cancer.
His Daughter's Breast Cancer Was Found After a Lump Was Missed
Melanie felt a small bump beneath her breast in July 2022. Although a mammogram five months earlier had not raised concerns, additional imaging and testing identified HER2-positive breast cancer that had reached nearby lymph nodes.
She subsequently underwent about 18 months of treatment, including chemotherapy, HER2-targeted therapy, a double mastectomy and 30 radiation treatments.
HER2-positive breast cancers contain high levels of a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, which can help cancer cells grow. Targeted drugs that block the HER2 pathway have transformed treatment for this subtype, including advanced disease.
In Melanie's case, breast surgeon Dr. Carlie Thompson said the combination of limited metastatic disease and advances in treatment helped bring her to a point of "no evidence of disease," meaning doctors could not detect cancer using available tests.
What Does 'Stage 4' Cancer Really Mean?
Stage 4 cancer generally means the disease has spread from its original location to distant parts of the body, a process known as metastasis.
The term can sound synonymous with a terminal diagnosis, but outcomes vary widely depending on the cancer type, where it has spread, the biology of the tumor, and how it responds to treatment.
For some cancers, treatment may focus on controlling the disease for as long as possible. In other cases, particularly when newer therapies are effective, patients with metastatic cancer may experience prolonged remission or have no detectable disease after treatment.
That does not necessarily mean the cancer can never return. Patients may continue to require monitoring and, depending on their cancer, ongoing treatment.
Shatner and Melanie's experience also illustrates the importance of personalized care. Their cancers were different, requiring different approaches based on tumor biology and individual circumstances.
Why Early Detection Matters
Although newer treatments have improved outcomes for some advanced cancers, earlier diagnosis can still make a significant difference.
Melanie's decision to investigate a lump that appeared despite a recent clear mammogram helped lead to an eventual diagnosis. Shatner, meanwhile, pursued evaluation after a facial mass continued to grow.
Persistent or unusual changes should not automatically be dismissed, particularly if they grow, change or fail to resolve.
The father and daughter now say their experience has changed how they view life, a reminder that a stage 4 diagnosis is serious, but advances in cancer research are continuing to reshape what that diagnosis can mean for some patients.
