Sharon Osbourne's armchair makes a case for a beloved retro furniture staple –design experts say it's back on trend for 2025

Reminiscent of the '70s, rattan's compelling texture has made it a fixture in many a home through the decades. While textural pieces dip in and out of style, we are confident that rattan is making a comeback.

Need proof? Look no further than Sharon Osbourne's living room, which features a handsome, rattan armchair accented by plush, white cushions.

The natural materials of the chair complement her large house plant perfectly while adding some visual interest to the neutral space. A surprisingly versatile style, rattan, wicker, and woven pieces are more than just popular outdoor furniture picks; they can elevate any indoor space as well, as design trend experts remind us.

'Rattan decor and natural wickered textures have exploded in popularity over the past few years,' says Cassandra Leisz, creative director at Ruggable. 'Traditionally, the style would most commonly be used for outdoor furniture, but we’re seeing its warmth and welcoming organic texture making the leap indoors with decor applications spanning furniture, cabinetry, vases, and frames.

Rattan specifically refers to an intricate weave of stems of rattan palms, so it’s an organic, natural material that lends itself perfectly to a casual, handcrafted ease. From headboards and coffee tables to coasters and lampshades, rattan can be easily incorporated into your home.'

While choosing a statement piece, like Osbourne's armchair, is a fantastic way to incorporate rattan into the home, there are alternative methods Leisz recommends that are a bit more subtle, but retain just as much influence.

'When introducing a new style to your home, you don’t need to do a full-out renovation to make an impact,' she says. 'Start small with simple home additions like plant pots that can elevate your greenery and give character to a space. Rattan pots are not only aesthetically fresh, but they are durable and easy to clean — and if well looked after, can last for years to come.'

In the kitchen, she suggests using woven pieces to hold existing accessories and appliances.

'A rattan tray could be the perfect addition to your countertop, combining practicality with style,' she says. 'Why not showcase your best kitchen essentials, utensils, you name it, inside a stylish tray, adding a touch of elegance to your kitchen? Simple additions like these can make a huge difference to the look and feel of your living space. It also makes for an easy hosting shift from indoors to out, if the weather invites you to take things outside.'

She continues, 'Updating your decorative accent is a simple way to refresh your space, without the hassle and expense of changing hardware which can be difficult to change as frequently. There are several ways you can incorporate rattan into your bedroom, from updating your lampshade, through to cozy accents like bed throws and decorative pillows.'

Adding woven textures to the floor with a jute rug is also a great way to add some of that textural goodness to your space. There are endless possibilities with rattan, and we expect to see it continue to bloom in 2025.
