Sharks start strong, but lose to Oilers on overtime goal

Zach Hyman scored at the 1:37 mark of overtime as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Sharks, 5-4, at Rogers Place on Thursday.

Hyman took a pass from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and beat goalie James Reimer as the Oilers swept the season series, beating the Sharks in all four meetings.

The Sharks also allowed third-period goals to Derek Ryan and Philip Broberg, with Broberg’s goal with 8:15 left in regulation time tying the game 4-4. Nick Bonino had given the Sharks a 4-3 lead just 65 seconds earlier.

Noah Gregor scored twice for the Sharks in his return to his hometown. Scott Reedy also scored and Reimer finished with 27 saves.

The Sharks finish the regular season on Friday in Seattle against the Kraken.

Gregor scored off an assist from Sasha Chmelevski at the 2:42 mark of the first period. Then, 26 seconds later Gregor took a pass from linemate Thomas Bordeleau at the side of the Oilers net and tried to find Rudolfs Balcers with a pass to the other side.

Instead, the puck went off the skate of Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard before it slid past goalie Mikko Koskinen at the 3:08 mark of the first for a 2-0 Sharks lead.

Ryan McLeod and Kailer Yamamoto scored the first two goals for Edmonton, which is already locked into second place in the Pacific Division and will face Los Angeles in a first-round playoff series.

Gregor, who was born in Beaumont, Alberta, which is just south of Edmonton, now has eight goals and 23 points in 62 games this season. He and Balcers have turned it up a notch since Bordeleau joined the Sharks seven games ago on April 17.
