In a recent episode of her podcast, Let's Be Clear, actress Shannen Doherty opened up about the impact her cancer diagnosis had on filming the movie Bethany. Doherty, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, shared how she received the news just before filming began.
During the podcast episode featuring director and screenwriter James Cullen Bressack, the duo discussed the challenges Doherty faced during the filming process. Bressack recalled receiving a call from Doherty when she had just started her medication, expressing her uncertainty about being able to handle the film. However, he reassured her that they would find a solution if needed, believing that diving into work might be beneficial for her.
Doherty showed her determination by showing up and giving her all to the role of Susan in the film. However, the actress admitted that her recent cancer diagnosis made it difficult for her to focus and perform. Specifically, there was a scene where she had to confront herself in the mirror, delivering a speech about beauty. Doherty found herself repeatedly forgetting her lines, which was unusual for someone known for their impeccable memory.
'My mind was consumed by thoughts of cancer - what it meant and what lay ahead - and suddenly, I was confronted with this monologue that felt utterly disconnected,' Doherty explained.
After discussing their options, Doherty and Bressack decided to approach the scene without words, drawing inspiration from Robert De Niro's silent intensity in The Godfather Part II. Instead of speaking, Doherty conveyed the emotions solely through her expression.
Bressack recalled, 'You looked in the mirror, tears welled up, and you didn't utter a word. It was all there in your expression.'
Doherty reflected on this moment as one she is particularly proud of as an actor. She believes that conveying everything solely through expression can be more challenging than relying on words, which can sometimes act as a crutch.
This isn't the first time Doherty has shared insights into her cancer journey. In a previous podcast episode, she spoke with oncologist Dr. Lawrence Piro about the evolution of cancer treatments and her hopes for future advancements. Despite her ongoing battle, Doherty remains optimistic and hopeful that advancements like T-cell therapy will allow her to continue living a full life.
Shannen Doherty's experience while filming Bethany serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination individuals facing cancer can possess. Despite the challenges she faced, Doherty found a way to channel her emotions into her role, ultimately delivering a breathtaking performance that showcased her acting prowess. Her vulnerability and dedication are an inspiration to many, reminding us all of the strength that resides within us during difficult times.
